The Frenchman partnered Joao Felix in the final third of the field as Antoine Griezmann made his first appearance of the season.
Due to the difficulty of Griezmann’s loan from Barcelona, there has been much speculation about his future. Diego Simeone’s team allegedly agreed to pay £35 million for the attacker next summer if he plays in at least 45 minutes of 14 of Atletico’s games this season.
In the midst of the defense for Real Madrid, a healthy Eder Militao took the place of Antonio Rudiger, and Rodrygo acted as the false nine in Karim Benzema’s ongoing absence.
Atletico had the first half-chance of the match in the sixth minute when Felipe climbed high to meet a deep free kick from Marcos Llorente, but his header dropped onto the top of the net. This came after a flurry of fouls in the opening exchanges.
After Felix’s goal-bound effort from the ensuing corner was blocked, Yannick Carrasco’s shot from the 12th minute was deflected just wide of the Real Madrid goal. Atletico Madrid had the better opening on home soil.
In the 17th minute, Geoffrey Kondogbia missed a chance, but less than a minute later, Rodrygo’s half-volley conversion of Aurelien Tchouameni’s brilliant ball gave Real Madrid the lead.
Thibaut Courtois was on hand to make a fantastic stop to his left when Griezmann came close to a leveler in the 25th minute when he raced clear of a number of Real Madrid challenges before hitting toward goal, and Kondogbia headed over from close range moments later.
In the 36th minute, Real Madrid extended their advantage when Valverde scored at the far post after Vinicius Junior had entered the Atletico area and hit the wall.
Alvaro Morata and Matheus Cunha were substituted for Rodrigo De Paul and Felix by Atletico manager Simeone just beyond the hour mark, and as the half went on, the home team continued to enjoy an increasing amount of possession.
However, Real Madrid kept up their defensive fortitude and remained a threat on the counterattack because to the quickness of Rodrygo and Vinicius.
Atletico changed to a 4-4-2 after the two substitutes, with Griezmann moving into a deeper position, but the team struggled to create clear opportunities, leaving them eight points behind their competitors in the standings.
Within fifteen minutes, Carrasco and Koke were replaced by Angel Correa and Hermoso, the hosts, while Simeone frantically searched for the door’s key.
As the frustration of the home team increased, Ancelotti responded by substituting Rudiger for Mendy and moving David Alaba to left-back. Los Blancos then continued to hold firm.
But in the 83rd minute, Hermoso used his back to score an Atletico goal by converting a corner kick from Griezmann after Courtois had mishandled the ball inside the penalty area.
