Former Tottenham Hotspur manager, Tim Sherwood believes the Arsenal star is a better player to James Maddison.
Arsenal will face North London rivals Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, September 24, with both sides starting the season in good form.
Maddison, having joined Tottenham from Leicester City last summer is enjoying a fine start to life under Ange Postecoglou and was voted Premier League Player of the Month for August.
During an appearance on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Tim Sherwood was asked to assess how many Tottenham players could make it into the current Arsenal squad. To everyone’s surprise, Sherwood had difficulty naming even a single Tottenham player for this hypothetical scenario.
While James Maddison came close to earning a nod, Sherwood ultimately conceded that, in his opinion, Martin Odegaard is the superior player at this juncture.

Sherwood delved into the qualities of the two midfield maestros, stating, “At the moment, there’s not one standing out to me who gets into the team. Vicario, I don’t know because I don’t know enough about him; he started off very well. I was thinking Son, but who do you leave out? Saka? Martinelli? Odegaard has to be in the team; he goes in where Maddison would go in.”
He continued, “We’ve seen Maddison have these spells at Leicester. He has better players around him now, so hopefully he can continue playing on a regular basis like he is, and then he would have a chance, but I’m not sure where I’d fit him in at this moment because Odegaard has to be in before him.”
While Odegaard has outperformed Maddison over the past year, it must be acknowledged that Maddison is making rapid strides.
The Tottenham star has kicked off this season in sensational fashion, arguably emerging as the standout player in the league. If he sustains this level of performance for a few more months, the debate between the two players could become much closer.
Both Maddison and Odegaard are undeniably gifted, and fans eagerly anticipate their upcoming clash on the pitch next week.
