Piers Morgan has criticized Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for his decision to bench Aaron Ramsdale in the win over Everton, labeling it as ‘humiliating’ for the goalkeeper.
Instead, David Raya, on loan to Arsenal, started in goal and kept a clean sheet, marking his first appearance for the Gunners.
Piers Morgan vehemently disagreed with Arteta’s choice, especially considering Ramsdale’s consistent performance as the number one goalkeeper throughout the previous season.
In a tweet, he expressed his frustration, saying, “I don’t understand why Ramsdale has been dropped? Havertz, yes… but Ramsdale has consistently been superb for us. Why humiliate him? I don’t believe in having two top ‘keepers with neither knowing who’s No1.”
He continued, “Nothing against Raya, who is very good, but I don’t like the way Ramsdale is being treated. Has any team ever won the League by rotating two top goalkeepers? I have no idea, but I doubt it.”

Arteta defended his decision to bench Ramsdale after the win, emphasizing that both Ramsdale and Raya possess a high level of quality and will receive significant game-time throughout the season.
He explained, “The same rationale that Fabio played here or that Eddie played ahead of Gabriel Jesus. I haven’t had a single question on why Gabriel hasn’t started – he has won more trophies, including me in that dressing room, but they don’t [ask why].”
Arteta acknowledged the historical practice of rotating goalkeepers and expressed his willingness to make such decisions when needed.
He stated, “Someone is going to do it, and it’ll be strange, and you’ll ask why, but tell me why not? If you have all the qualities in another goalkeeper to do something, then do it.”
Looking ahead, Arsenal’s next matches include a Champions League fixture against PSV Eindhoven and the North London Derby against Tottenham. The goalkeeper selection will likely remain a significant topic of discussion between these games.
